Back to News
Summer is fast approaching! Whether you are building a brand new pool or renovating your existing one, SABdrain drainage systems provides the perfect solution. Maintain the highly sought-after resort style look with our options architecturally designed grating, delivering maximum surface water drainage. The design process of a pool area should not be neglected as a poorly designed swimming pool/spa surroundings can compromise the safety of those using it and the longevity of the area. Including drainage in the costing process of planning the pool is incredibly important as the drain you want may be more costly than you think. This usually results in a cheap grate being installed that may not last and the space does not look as amazing as you’ve envisioned.

Importance of Pool & Spa Drainage

A walkway around the pool should provide drainage away from the pool edge to avoid creating hazardous conditions within the pool or spa enclosure, and aid unobstructed backwash & wastewater drainage. The combination of poor drainage, water from the pool and the popular concrete or tiled surrounds will quickly become extremely dangerous. Accidental slips and falls on pool decks are common due to large amounts of moisture sitting on a smooth surface.

Aesthetics

It is important to think of your drainage during the pool building process. More decorative grates will suit a plain surround, or the colour of a stainless steel grate can be too harsh with certain types pavers.

Jonite is the perfect answer for a seamless look. Choose from their wide range of colours & designs, or colour match for a perfect transition.

Sustainability

Creating a pool or spa area that is durable & looks amazing can be difficult. Many factors in swimming pool/spa environments can contribute towards possible corrosion of drainage components. Elements such as temperature, pH levels, salt levels, chlorination level, pool use & proximity of drain to pool should be taken into consideration. The SAB900 range is the best option for swimming pool/spa surrounds, as it provides a high end look whilst maintaining sustainability. SABdrain recommends a stainless steel grate, however the 351 plastic grate is also suitable.

There are many grades of stainless steel available, however the most common grades used in these types of environments are 304 & 316. These types of stainless steel will provide the best protection against corrosion. Please refer to our chemical resistance page for information about our polypropylene channels or download more information here about the stainless steel grates.

Another option is our Jonite stone range. Their specialty stone pool grates are rust resistant and have colour durability due to the low water absorption. Find out more about this range here.

Safety

When choosing the perfect drain to compliment your pool, safety is no doubt the highest priority. SABdrain’s 900 stainless steel range ticks all boxes with lockdown grates & antislip nodules to prevent dangerous slips and falls. The SABdrain 901 & 902 features lockdown grates.

Maintenance

Whilst SABdrain strives to provide you with a low maintenance drainage system, the pool/spa surrounds and drainage should be washed with fresh water regularly. Periodically checking the drainage grate is also recommended. Whilst stainless steel is the best option aesthetically and sustainably, we understand that it may not fit everyone’s budget or ideals. SABdrain’s plastic 351 drainage can also be used.
