Maintenance & Upkeep of Stormwater Drains

Back to News

It is essential to complete regular stormwater drain maintenance to ensure a safe environment on your property. When drainage systems overflow, it creates unsafe conditions and potentially costly damage. Here’s your guide to maintaining & the upkeep of stormwater drains.

Importance of Keeping Drains Clear

Drains ensure water drains effectively to prevent flooding and ensure overall safety. When they become clogged, water will accumulate on the ground creating dangerous puddles or flooding. This can lead to costly, structural damage to buildings foundations, driveways and gardens. By doing simple and regular upkeep & maintenance you can minimise the risk of this occurring.

Preventative Maintenance

Visual Inspection of Drainage System

A visual inspection is necessary to check the channel grates for any mechanical damage and/or clogging due to debris within the grate openings. This can help you identify potential issues or damage before it is a major problem.
  • Look for cracks or corrosion in the channel or grate
  • Check for blockages, rubbish, debris, sediment
  • Inspect for leaks or signs of water damage

Grate Cleaning

To clean drainage grates, sweep away any coarse & solid debris (e.g cigarettes, paper, stones) with a broom. The grate openings can also be cleaned with a high pressure cleaner. Stubborn objects can be removed with a screwdriver or other sharp object, taking care not to damage grates.

Channel Cleaning

If possible, remove the grates. Ensure to not bend the grates as it will be difficult to place them back.Remove any large pieces of debris. Drainage channels can be cleaned with a broom or shovel. Persistent dirt can be cleaned with a high pressure cleaner (jet pressure up to 120 bar), running the cleaning water along the entire length of channel. Ensure all sediment within the channel is loosened and rinsed down to the plumbing/sump pit. The discharge points must be cleaned & ensure pipework is draining effectively.

Installation Environment

Adjacent surfaces such as flooring, concrete or asphalt must also be checked at regular intervals. It is important to check for damage or an elevation of the channel or grate above the backfill surface. Keep this area clear from dirt, leaves, sticks, rubbish & other debris as much as possinle. By doing this, you are preventing the debris from being washed into your drain, potentially creating blockages.
