Superior Materials for Your Tree Grates
Architects, developers and other customers of hardscape design make Jonite their top choice when choosing eco-friendly grates for a landscape. Jonite holds a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification for their global efforts to use materials responsibly. In Jonite’s manufacturing process, they incorporate at least 30% recycled content into products, including tree grates. This process is their commitment to contributing to a healthier, more sustainable environment.
Jonite stone composite products consist of 95% natural aggregates and advanced natural polymers. The use of welded materials provides high performance and reliable, load-bearing strength for standards applications in zones with pedestrians and vehicles. Jonite comply with BS EN 124:2015 and 1433:2008 directives, making their tree grates an excellent option for trees needing drainage solutions in any residential or commercial area.
Jonite’s journey started with a dream to create the first grate made of stone with the long-term strength and durability to match one of metal. They wanted to provide the same aesthetically pleasing visuals as the stone castles created in the Middle Ages. After seven years of extensive research and development, Jonite launched the world’s first reinforced stone grate for commercial use in 1994.
Jonite encourages you to get creative with customized designs. You can bring any idea to life with artistic or contemporary patterns made with the stone composite.

Benefits of Jonite Tree Grates
Trees are essential in landscape planning. They have positive effects, such as reducing urban warming effects, providing shade to pedestrians, and adding a focal point to your driveway. Suitable for any tree, the features of our grates offer the following advantages:
- Pedestrian safety: Tree grates are vital because they help avoid soil compaction for proper drainage and prevent tree roots from becoming obstacles to pedestrians, thus creating more walking space. The rough and natural matte textures of our grates meet international slip-resistance guidelines, providing safety near hospitals and schools.
- Nature accommodation: Jonite tree gratings are designed with the promotion of tree protection in mind, allowing rainwater to seep through while having narrow slits to prevent litter from falling through and smothering the soil. Some tree grates allow for the expandability of inner diameter to accommodate the exponential growth of tree trunks during the maturity stage. Add inner rings when the trees are younger and remove them as the tree matures.
- Theft prevention: Cast-iron tree grates may be prone to theft. Jonite-reinforced stone tree grilles are theft-resistant because they do not pose any value for scrap due to their stone material integrity.
- Temperature control: Jonite tree grates have low heat absorption properties to help create a conducive environment for the trees. Using cast iron or metal can cause surrounding temperatures to soar, which might not promote ideal growth in trees.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant: Some of the Jonite tree gratings are certified ADA compliant. Making Jonite tree grates accessible in hospitals, clinics, and public areas as wheelchair users have no issues navigating their way around the grills.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Are Jonite tree grates compliant with the American Disabilities Act (ADA)?
Some of our models are ADA compliant. Should you prefer a particular design, Jonite can modify and customize the grates to be ADA compliant.
Are Jonite tree grates slip resistant?
Jonite tree grates are slip resistant. Jonite has conducted Pendulum and Ramp tests on their products to make sure they meet industry standards for slip resistance. With a class V on the Pendulum test and an R10 on the Ramp test, Jonite can handle most locations and applications.
Are Jonite tree grates suitable for vehicular applications?
Jonite current standard models can sustain loads of up to 5KN, which is strictly for pedestrian application. However, Jonite can customize the tree grates’ design and the support frames for a specific load class. Please note that the support for the tree grates needs to be certified by a professional engineer to sustain the particular load class.
Can Jonite tree grates be expanded for growing trees?
Not all tree species need this feature, but if you do, Jonite has selected models like their ADA Collection, which offers up to 4 different inner diameters (390/460/530/600mm). Should you need even more expandability, some models like the Square Slots can expand even beyond that. Contact us for better advice on this.
How durable are Jonite tree grates compared to cast iron tree grates?
Jonite tree grates, like all Jonite products, are made of a proprietary stone composite material with unique properties. When correctly installed, the material ages very similarly to natural stone but excellent UV and weather resistance. However, unlike cast iron, the material does not rust with time and is outstanding for many applications.
Is there a minimum order quantity for custom tree grates?
No. Jonite is more than happy to customize one set of tree grates.
What can I customize on the Jonite tree grates?
Along with the usual suspects of colour and design customization across most of Jonite products, they can also customize the tree grates’ configurations. For example, if you require a specific shape or an unusually large area, Jonite can plan and design tree grate configurations to fit your needs. Features like expandability, lockability, and light ports can also be customized.
Are Jonite products sustainable?
Jonite commits to environmentally sustainable practices. We actively manage our energy, water, and waste with the future in mind. They use at least 30% recycled aggregates, which reduces carbon emissions by up to 80%.
Jonite products are also Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP) certified (4 ticks, leader). This means that designers can score additional points under the Functional Systems Criteria (Flooring, Ceiling, Roof, External Wall, Internal Wall and Door systems) and/or Singular Sustainable Products outside of Functional Systems Criteria. This ensures that sustainability is integrated throughout the design and manufacturing process of green building products.
Do Jonite products contain silica?
Jonite has worked hard to ensure their products contain less than 1% silica, which has been accepted by SafeWorkNSW. It is rare that a Jonite product will need to be cut on site. If so, it has to be done with correct PPE.
